[Abk. für Dynamic Link Library, »dynamische Bibliothek (von Programmverbindungen)«], eine Datei, die nach dem Bibliothekskonzept (Bibliothek) angelegt und genutzt wird. Dabei werden Routinen nicht dauerhaft mit dem Maschinencode eines Programms verbunden, sondern erst beim Aufruf durch den Linker aktiviert.
 
DLLs kommen bei allen Programmen zum Einsatz, die unter dem Betriebssystem Windows (ab Version 3.0) oder OS/2 laufen. Der Vorteil der DLL-Technik ist, dass eine Routine, die von mehreren Anwendungsprogrammen benötigt wird, nicht in jedes Programm eingefügt werden muss, sondern dass es reicht, eine einzige DLL-Datei dafür zu speichern. Auf diese Weise wird Speicherplatz gespart. Es können jedoch Probleme auftreten, wenn ein später installiertes Programm eine bereits vorhandene DLL-Datei überschreibt und die neuere Version von dem älteren Programm nicht benutzt werden kann.
